Current State: Building a Home with Erin Jay
For creator Erin Jay, a weekend drive across Greater Vancouver became a chance to connect with her husband, reflect on the life they’re building together and move through it a little more intentionally.
Every drive starts (and ends) somewhere different. Current State with Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging is about where you are — and what moves you forward. We connected with Erin Jay, whose love of home decor thrifting and thoughtful design has shaped the way she builds a home. Her Current State? Learning how to make space for what matters.
We asked sustainable living content creator Erin Jay (@lifew.erin) to describe her life right now, and she told us she’s been thinking a lot about what makes a home.
When she and her husband moved into their new home eight months ago, they decided almost immediately that they didn’t want to rush the process of filling it. They’d spent years moving among smaller spaces before landing in one that finally felt more permanent — somewhere they could imagine growing into over time.
So instead of buying everything at once, they started collecting things slowly.
“It’s probably going to look unfinished to some people for a while,” Erin says. “But we’re OK with that.”
Decorating together has become part collaboration, part negotiation. It’s become less about “completing” the house and more about figuring out what home actually means to both of them.
Perfection has never really been the goal.
A Day With an Open Agenda
That feeling carried into a recent weekend drive from Vancouver to Coquitlam.
They hit the road with no strict plans beyond spending time together, avoiding work talk and hoping to find a few meaningful items for their home.
One of their first stops was a small thrift store Erin had never visited before. They ended up talking with the woman working there, and Erin remembers watching her greet customers by name as they walked in, turning a simple browse into a reminder of how meaningful local spaces can be.

Later, the couple stopped at Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging in Sunwood Square, Coquitlam, BC. While charging, they finished lunch, played a quick game of cards and picked up groceries for friends they’d be hosting later that weekend. By the time they returned to their car, several different types of cars had pulled into the electric vehicle charging stations.
“It just felt very easy,” Erin says.
Freedom to Wander
That ease is something Erin appreciates. Before getting their EV late last year, even small day trips like this one involved calculations: rideshare costs, timing, whether a destination even felt worth the effort of getting there. Now, Erin says, there’s more spontaneity in the way they move through the area.

By the end of the afternoon, they’d picked up a beaded bag Erin plans to bring on an upcoming trip to Mexico, vintage frames for future projects, a silver platter for the house and a linen shirt her husband found for summer.
The items were small, but the day felt meaningful.
As they drove, the conversation kept drifting toward the future: upcoming travel, long-term goals and the awareness that life won’t always look the same. One day, they think, the office they’re decorating may become a nursery. Their weekends may eventually revolve around different responsibilities or routines.
But whatever the future holds, between thrift stores, a charging stop and conversations about the future, Erin says she realized how much she wants to remember this season of life exactly as it is now.
