When we asked Madison Vitale (@madi.snacks) what her first Mother’s Day was like, she didn’t start by recapping the plan. She told us about the emotion behind it.

Seven months earlier, Madison and her husband, Michael, welcomed their son, James. Around the same time, they moved from the New York City area to Connecticut. It was a compressed season of change: new baby, new home, new routines, less sleep and a different sense of what a day could hold.

So when Mother’s Day arrived, it felt like a chance to truly celebrate where she is now.

Food as a Way Back to Herself

Becoming a mom shifted some of Madison’s priorities, but it hasn’t meant leaving the parts of herself she loves behind. If anything, she’s been more aware of what she wants to carry forward.

Food has always been one of those things.

“I’m always going to be eating something delicious,” she says. “It’s what brings our family together.”

Eventually, food became work, creativity and family history all at once.

Now, she’s finding ways to bring James into that world. “He loves going to the farmer’s market,” she says.

The Plan — and How Charging Fits In

Madison didn’t want anything complicated for Mother’s Day. She simply wanted lobster rolls.

“When I was pregnant last summer, I craved them,” she says. “So it felt like a full-circle moment to be able to take James on this journey.”

The plan was simple: Pile into the car with Michael, James and their dog, Totti, and head toward the shore for a lobster roll crawl.

Now that she’s a mom, Madison says, there’s more to pack, more to think about and more to manage. But there’s also more to notice and appreciate.

“It was really conveniently located,” she says. “Right off the highway, and really clear. And you can shop while charging, which we did.”

With a baby in the car, she adds, a quick, reliable stop keeps her day moving without adding one more thing to think about.

A Day That Felt Like Them

After charging, Madison and her family continued toward the shore.

The scent of the ocean, she says, carries a memory. When she was growing up, her family would go to the Connecticut shore. Now, she’s paying the experience forward to her son, bringing him to restaurants, letting him watch, taste, listen, smell and be part of the day.

Rather than putting their lives on hold after becoming parents, Madison and Michael are finding ways to bring James into the experiences they already love.

Sharing What She Loves

When Madison looks back at this season of motherhood, she hopes she remembers being present.

Her phone is part of her work, she says. Her days are full. There’s always something to edit, cook, clean, pack or plan. But motherhood has sharpened her awareness of what can wait — and what can’t.

That’s what made her Mother’s Day road trip so special: bringing James into something she and Michael already loved doing — and taking the time to feel it.
